On behalf of the Darfurian communities in the United States, we would like to invite your org to join us during the holy month of Ramadan in remembering the hundreds of thousands of lives lost in Darfur over the last three years and in praying for a quick and peaceful resolution to this enduring tragedy in our homeland.

As you may know, Darfur has been embroiled in a deadly conflict since 2003. At least four hundred thousand people have been killed; more than two million innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes and now live in displaced-persons camps in Sudan or in refugee camps in neighboring Chad; and more than three million men, women, and children are completely reliant on international aid for survival.

In order to shed light on the genocide and educate our communities, we ask that your organization make Thursday, October 5, 2006, a day to draw attention to the conflict that has ravaged our friends, family, and country for too long. Some national Muslim organizations have already agreed to work with our communities on this day to promote Darfur awareness and activism. These organizations will ask their members and contacts to organize a Ramadan IFTAR on this Thursday night during Ramadan and then ask their network of Imams to deliver Khutbhat Al-Juma'a about Darfur the next day. Darfurians from across the country will attend these events to provide eye witness accounts about the conflict in Darfur and to share testimonials about the suffering of their friends and families.

It is our hope that your org and other national and local Muslim organizations will help us coordinate even more Iftars and Khutbhat Al-Juma'a on these days. At the same time, the Save Darfur Coalition has also offered to provide some form of subsidization to help facilitate Iftars and the transportation for Darfurians to these gatherings. In addition, the Coalition will invite via email its 400,000 activists and 175 Coalition members to participate in this day by asking them to fast in memory of Darfur. The Coalition will also share information with these individuals and groups about planned interfaith Iftars across the country on this day. The national student organization for Darfur advocacy, Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND), has already begun to reach out to students and Muslim Student Associations (MSA) on campuses across the country.

As a leading voice in the American Muslim community, your organization's participation in our efforts to bring together the Muslim, Darfuri, and activist communities would be instrumental. If your organization would like to unite with us on this day, please email Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim of the Darfur Alert Coalition at mibrahim@afsc.org and (215) 241-7128; and Sean Brooks of the Save Darfur Coalition at sean@savedarfur.org and (202) 478-6197.

Sean has been working closely with our organizations, including in the coordination of a joint letter that we sent to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan two weeks ago. We have included the letter and press release, which outline the demands that our community has for the international community.

We thank you for your consideration of this request, and hope that you will join us during the special time of Ramadan to call attention to the mass suffering of our people.

Sincerely,

Mr. Motasim Adam
President
Darfur People’s Association of New York

Dr. Abdeljabar Adem
President
Darfur Human Rights Organization of the USA

Dr. Mahmoud Braima
President
Darfur Association in the United States

Mr. Suliman Giddo
President
Darfur Peace and Development

Ms. Blanche Foster
on behalf of the Board of Directors
Darfur Rehabilitation Project

Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim
On behalf of the Board of Directors
Darfur Alert Coalition

Mr. Bakheit Shata
Executive Director
Darfur Community Organization (Nebraska)

Mr. Mohamed Yahya
Chairman
Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy
____________________________________

Save Darfur Faith Action Packets
We have produced a guide to help you mobilize your congregation to help the people of Darfur. Eric Reeves

grassroots groups challenge world leaders to protect the innocent
The showdown between the UN Security Council and the Government of Sudan has come to a head. The grassroots movement to end the genocide in Darfur issues the "Grassroots Call to Action for Darfur" and calls for a Demonstration on Friday, September 8th in anticipation of the Government of Sudan and the Arab League presenting their case to resist U.N. Peacekeepers to protect Darfur before the UN Security Council on Monday, September 11th. This is the moment for world leaders to find the courage to put people before politics or bear the shame of intentionally allowing Darfur to become the next Rwanda.

Africa Action, The Darfur People's Association of New York, Darfur Vigil Group of New York, Shine A Ray of Hope and The Darfur Alert Coalition are sponsoring this demonstration at the UN to deliver the Call to Action to the UN Security Council on Friday, September 8th, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM at Ralph Bunch Park across the street from the UN (43rd and First Ave. NY). There will be a special program from noon to 1:00 PM

grassroots call to action for darfur
We are gravely concerned about the mortal danger faced by millions of innocent civilians in Darfur. We demand that the United Nations Security Council immediately deploy a robust peacekeeping force to stop the genocide in Darfur, with or without the consent of the Government of Sudan, providing this force with a clear mandate and effective capability to protect the civilian population and to ensure access to humanitarian assistance.

Background Note: The UN Security Council has affirmed its responsibility to protect innocent civilians in Darfur. UN member states must support the immediate implementation of Resolution 1706, starting with a fully equipped rapid reaction force to be deployed in Darfur by October 1, 2006 when the mandate expires for the current African Union peacekeeping force. The new board elected on August 27, 2006, will be led by its world reknown Sudanese scholar and president, Dr. Ali B. Ali-Dinar, while the management and daily activities of DAC remain in the most capable leadership hands of Lou Ann Merkle, our DAC Executive Director.

The DAC board of directors is a diverse assembly of American and Sudanese activists and academics --- all leaders in their various areas of activist work --- committed to ending the genocide and general conditions of oppression now prevailing in the Darfur region of Sudan. Represented on the board are a broadly diverse mix of people, including: Jews, Christians and Muslims, secular activists, European and African Americans, students, women and, most significantly, members from the Darfur immigrant community living in the Philadelphia metro and Delaware Valley area.

It’s not often when likeminded leaders with the gifts of imagination, dedication and commitment to engage in struggle gather together for a great humanitarian purpose. Fortunately for DAC this is just what happened on August 27th! With a new board of directors now in place, we of the Darfur Alert Coalition hope to intensify our work and reinforce our efforts to help in the great international and humanitarian task of resolving the crisis in Darfur.

New Darfur Alert Coalition board members are:

Officers of the Executive Committee
Dr. Ali Dinar, President; Jim Remsen, Vice President; Fatima Haroun, Vice President; Corresponding Secretary, Dr. A.S. Mahdi Ibn-Ziyad; Ibrahim Hamid, Treasurer; Lou Ann Merkle, Executive Director (ex officio)

Committee Directors
Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, Education Director; Tigani Abu Algasim, Volunteering Director; Ken Heard, Registeration Committee; Suad Mansour, Darfur Programs Director; Ibrahim Hamid, Fundraising Director; Rita Fitzgerald, Advocacy Director; and Burt Siegel, Communications Director.

Like all of our Darfurian friends in the in-country refugee camps and here in the Philadelphia metro area our prayers and our struggles are for first for a just resolution that brings security, peace and stability to the region. Thereafter, we pray for economic and social development initiatives in Darfur that will allow the thousands of displaced women, men, children and families to return home and restore a sense of normalcy and dignity to their lives as they advance in improving material well-being.

To these ends the new DAC board of directors has dedicated its vision and work for the coming period.

Sincerely,

Dr. A.S. "This resolution is opposing the Darfur peace agreement."

The Security Council vote on Thursday was 12 in favour, with abstentions from Russia, China and Qatar, the only Arab council member, despite Sudanese and Arab requests the vote be postponed.But the troops cannot be deployed until Sudan agrees. The United Nations wants to replace or absorb an African Union force in Darfur, which has funds until mid-October and whose mandate expires on Sept. 30.

Violence has escalated since the AU-brokered peace accord in May which was signed by only one of three negotiating factions and rejected by tens of thousands in Darfur.Tens of thousands have been killed and 2.5 million people forced from their homes since mostly non-Arab rebels took up arms in early 2003. Washington calls the rape, pillage and murder genocide, a charge Khartoum rejects.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating alleged war crimes in the region.Observers say Khartoum, who likens the U.N. transition to Western colonialism, is worried U.N. troops would arrest any officials likely to be indicted by the ICC.

Recognizing Genocide: 2 years later

Two Years Too Many:
Break the Deadlock on Darfur Rally & Non-Violent Civil Disobedience*

Join Africa Action, activists from around the country, religious leaders, students, and members of the Darfuri and Sudanese community at a gathering to mark the second anniversary of the Bush Administration's declaration that genocide is occurring in Darfur, Sudan.

Date: September 9, 2006
Location: Lafayette Park & White House Sidewalk
16 & H Street N.W., Washington D.C.
Time: 12:00pm (noon)

*You can participate in this event without risking arrest.

Co-Sponsored by: American Jewish World Service, NAACP, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, International Research Foundation, Sudan Peace Advocates Network, Darfur Peace and Development, Africa Faith & Justice Network
This rally has been endorsed by: Members of the Congressional Black Caucus
LEARN MORE AT: http://www.africaaction.org/

FOR GENERAL INFORMATION ON BUSES CONTACT US AT : mobilize@africaaction.org
Philadelphia Bus will leave by 8:00 AM from:New Hope Baptist Church1609-1611 Federal StreetPhiladelphia, PA

CAMPAIGN TO STOP GENOCIDE IN DARFUR
Africa Action has been calling for the U.S. to introduce a resolution at the United Nations (UN) to authorize the deployment of a UN peacekeeping force with a minimum of 20,000 troops with a mandate to protect civilians. He also claims that the body count of the Darfur conflict reported by the UN is wildly inaccurate and that there is no evidence of atrocities committed by the Janjaweed.

He is the chief public relations man for the Sudanese regime, and is the spokesman for genocide denial.When Taha expressed a desire to resign his post in early 2004, President Omar Al-Bashir convinced him to remain because he would "be needed in the coming phase" of their political efforts to keep U.N. peacekeeping forces out of Sudan.Various sources allege that his administration has supported the Janjaweed in their activities in Darfur.(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Osman_Taha)

Defendant #3: Interior Minister General Abdel Rahim Mohammed Hussein was the “shadow head of the army at the time of the 1989 coup that brought the National Islamic Front to power; after the coup, secretary to the Revolution Command Council that suspended the 1985 Constitution, abrogated press freedom, disbanded all political parties and trade unions, and endorsed ethnic militias as a weapon of war…
Under his plan, the government of Sudan would complete its redrawing of the ethnic map of Darfur. African farmers burned out of the countryside by the army and the Janajweed would be herded into concentration camps where they would exist as a slave underclass under permanent threat of arms." When Osama bin Laden found haven in Sudan from 1990 to 1996, Gosh was his personal government minder. Last year, Ken Silverstein of the Los Angeles Times detailed extensive counterintelligence cooperation between Gosh and the CIA, and reported that the CIA even flew Gosh to CIA headquarters on a private jet to swap trade secrets. The quality of the intelligence that the CIA obtains from Gosh is unclear. But what is widely known is Gosh’s role in devising Khartoum’s counterinsurgency-by-genocide strategy for Darfur. He is Sudan’s answer to Heinrich Himmler -- the organizational mastermind upon which every genocide depends. Gosh is behind the recruitment of the local janjaweed militia; the well-known coordination between government forces and the janjaweed; the harassment of aid workers; and, as the leader of Sudan’s security services, he bears responsibility for the arbitrary

Defendant #5: Musa Hilal. Later, Mr. Hilal, widely regarded as the top Janjaweed leader in Darfur, was interviewed over the course of several hours by Human Rights Watch researchers in Khartoum.Hilal now admits that the government of Sudan has directed all military activities of the militia forces he recruited. “All of the people in the field are led by top army commanders,” he told Human Rights Watch on videotape. “…These people get their orders from the Western command center, and from Khartoum.” (Source: www.hrw.org/video/2005/musa)

Activism: Darfur Video Game..

The ongoing violence in Sudan's Darfur region has spawned many forms of activism. The absence of specific mechanizm to disarm the Jangawid in the Agreement and bringing them to justice was the main harsh criticism from the SCP to the role of US in this incomplete peace agreement.
The SCP considered the Agreement a deal between the 'international community and the NIF regime' with no representation of the Darfur people's interest .

Read the full PR in Arabic below and at the SCP website: www.midan.net

01/07/2006
The CPS View on the Deployment
of UN Forces in Darfur

First, as a matter of principle, no Sudanese national would accept or condone any foreign military presence in Sudan. Such presence would be seen to undermine national sovereignty irrespective of the objectives of such action or the manner of the implementation. This would be the case even if such foreign military presence is carried by the international community and the approval of the UN and the Government of Sudan (GOS);

Second, the main issue for us at this juncture is the general demand of the Sudanese people of Darfur to ensure their protection by the international forces. The African Union military presence in Darfur has failed to secure this objective. The people of Darfur have no confidence in the GOS, which they consider to be a main partner in the conflict that engulfs their region. The people in Darfur have seen their villages burned down and have witnessed continual Janjawid militia attacks. We in the CPS find no reason for objecting to the legitimate demand of the people of Darfur. Our primary and foremost concern is the protection of our people in Darfur from the horrific crimes and ethnic cleansing they have been subjected to. Our stance regarding this matter is not subject to any compromise under any circumstances;

Third, the decision for the deployment of international forces in Sudan came through a UN resolution, and therefore, these forces will be under the command of the UN of which Sudan is a member. Hence, we call on the GoS to abide by the will of the international community. We believe that it is important that the implementation of the UN resolution should take place through a mutual understanding between the GoS and the UN on the one hand, and the UN and Sudanese political forces on the other hand, especially around the issues addressing the protection of civilians in Darfur, and the composition of the international forces i.e. the countries involved.

Fourth, there has been a long history of direct intervention by the international community and its different organisations in Sudan. Those were for the provision of relief for refugees, internally displaced people and victims of famine as well as eradication of epidemic and endemic diseases. However, the recent interventions of the international community were meant to address major and decisive political issues such as the civil war in Southern Sudan, Nuba Mountains, and Darfur. The role of the UN should not be limited only to providing protection for civilians in Darfur; it should also include enforcing a political resolution of the different crises in Sudan. That role can begin by facilitating a Dafurian-Darfurian dialogue; listening to the views and reservations of the people of Darfur regarding the recent Abuja agreement; and dealing with an open mind with such debates and incorporate them as an integral part of an agreement that might be reached on the Darfur Crisis. Finally, it would be necessary to convene a political conference bringing together all the political forces in the country, including armed opposition groups in Darfur (with the representation of all sections of Darfur people and the incorporation of all their initiatives to resolve the conflict in Darfur);

Fifth, we reiterate, anew, the CPS’s position regarding the ordeal of our people in Darfur and call for the immediate implementation of the following measures:
1.         Imposing an international and regional control over the ceasefire agreement, and devising effective means and mechanisms for the collection of weapons in the region, as well as the surveillance of means of land transportation and ports to prevent proliferation of weapons through the assistance of the international community;
2.         Putting in place an effective mechanism for the disbanding of the Janjawid militia and bringing its leaders to justice;
3.         Investigation of all crimes committed in the region with a view to finding those liable and brining them before courts inside or outside Sudan;
4.         Working for the return of refugees and internally displaced people to their homes; protecting them and compensating them for all the losses they suffered; and providing and transporting food and medical relief for them through secured tracks facilitated by the international community;
5. Convening a Darfurian-Darfurian dialogue conference with a view to enforcing the will of the Darfurian people and unifying the armed opposition groups so that they may agree on the legitimate demands of the people of Darfur.

Sixth, The CPS rejects all attempts of the GoS authorities to suppress opposing opinion. We believe that they had previously failed in this regard. They will fail again in suppressing our opinion regarding Sudanese National questions in our country. The authorities’ threat to renew repression will not deter Sudanese people, but will only augment the situation in the country and escalate the crisis. We call for the supremacy of the voice of wisdom so that all those concerned may be able to tackle the general crisis in the country through agreeing on a national project to rid the country of its crisis. Such a project should take on board the ethnic diversity and disparities in the economic development across the country. It should ensure a democratic representation of all concerned, and deal with issues of equitable development, and the fair sharing of power, wealth and resources in a manner that maintains a unified and peaceful Sudan.

The Secretariat of the CPS Central Committee
<a
